We are heading back to our spiritual home at Soundmaker Studio. From skreamo to dubstep to indie anthems and party jams. It’s going to be MENTAL. Shoegazers Citizens of Ice Cream and Irman Hilmi who goes by the stage name SPCBR are the main headliners from KL for the night.

The noiseworks does not stop there as our two KL headliners will be joined by local boys COMA (Post-Rock) and Ernest Zacharevic + Danno Spartacus (Dj set).

Occupy Dataran, the oldest among the lot, has been happening every Saturday night since 30th July, before Occupy Wall Street, and unlike Occupy Wall Street’s financial reform agenda, Occupy Dataran seems to be focused at the moment on exploring direct participatory democracy through people’s assemblies.

With elections around the corner, it’s a breath of fresh air seeing political posters not glorifying one person. Instead, the art of the different Occupy Sama-Sama assemblies produced so far, like their decision-making process, are focused on egalitarianism and understanding; and through this has attracted a regular crowd of activists and non-activists alike including musicians and artists who seem to find a weekly sanctuary of sorts in Occupy Dataran against a culture of authoritarianism, overt centralisation of political power, exclusiveness and other undemocratic habits of corporations, political parties and governments.

The first Occupy Penang on the 29th of November seemed to have a slightly different crowd made up mostly of university and polytechnic students who were curious about participatory democracy and sick of racism, cultural stereotyping and the lack of students’ rights to political participation. The next first Occupy will be on the other side of the peninsular in Kota Bharu, Kelantan so months down the road, it will be interesting to see the different aesthetic styles and themes in the art produced by the different Occupy assemblies and how the sustained use of attractive art and social media can spread participatory democracy around the country.

Milk consists of both Josh and Anna who both equally played and sung interchangeably throughout their set. They were joined together with their friend Lou who was started playing on their home-made tom-tom and sporadically switched instruments with the two throughout the night.

Not only did the trio do a full set with their own original tunes, the talented trio wowed the crowd with their spontaneity and creativity when they interacted with the crowd to blurt out random words and they created a tune right there on the spot. Songs about Sex-Craved- Bugs Bunny-in-skinny jeans and Sarong-wearing-transvestite-pizza-server were very Flight-of-the-Conchords-esque and was supremely deck.

It started out a little weird at first with people not used to the open space which the usual ZAP joint Soundmaker provided. But once a few drinks had been polished, the crowd finally got their Swag on and totally decked out the makeshift dance floor. MASSIVE. Enjoy the pics below.

If you like small instruments and big people than you will love Milk, Penang’s newest band – Milk will be playing their unique gypsy, folk, roots mix of original songs at the lovely Moontree 47 cafe.

Penang’s latest music duo Anna Pease and Joshua Lee have just moved into town and teach Ukulele and psychology (thats not a typo). Their story began beside a photocopier at a work Christmas party and to cut a long story short, they found their way to Penang on a small red motorbike.

Their brand of music intertwines 90s alt rock vocals together with electronic new age synths. Imagine the vocals of Yuki Chikudate from New York’s dream pop/shoegaze band Asobi Seksu fused together with the synths of chillwave talent, Toro Y Moi. Add a dark melancholy ambience to that and you get their first track Syren

“Syren is a song about relationships in the past,” said Djeannie Lee. “The first few initial tracks which I wrote previously, was when I was going through dark times. When Jo Ann (MFRL) came along and we formed +2dB together, it got even darker musically!”

 

The first thing that comes to your mind when you first listen to the track is how on earth a song can sound so dark and gloomy yet sounding so innocent pure and beautiful. With the lyrics written by MFRL, the stark contrast from both these emotional extremes pays a tribute to how good vocally +2dB really are. DJeannie who provides the lead vocals for this track, has a very unique voice which not only blends in with the aesthetics of the song but together with MFRL’s harmonisation both their vocals gives the song a life of it’s own.

 

Syren caught the attention of one KL’s most renowned dubstep Dj/producers, H3 who ended up collaborating with the duo to come up with Syren Part II. His incorporation of his dub influenced beats into the song, turns it into a mashup of vocal harmonies and bass.

It’s gonna be a deck night of Disco tunes and old school Rock anthems you can dance your legs off.

Yours truly will be doing a set at 10pm right before the night kicks off so come down find the Indiegoat/ZAP. crew, smash a couple of beers and lets go ballistic for the night.
